Does Hand Sanitizer Actually Work?

With school back in session, the spread of germs has begun. More often than not, our favorite go-to in order to prevent this spread is hand sanitizer. Portable hand sanitizer products kill germs on your hands and other surfaces on contact, helping to slow the spread of transmissible diseases like COVID-19.

Or that's what we hope. Nothing can beat washing your hands with soap and water, but in a pinch it's definitely nice to have some way to disinfect your hands. The thing is hand sanitizer doesn't only kill bad bacteria, but also beneficial bacteria that helps save off viruses.

Some of the most common viruses are:

  • COVID-19

  • Flu

  • Common colds

  • Stomach viruses

  • Cold Sores

  • And many more!

So hand sanitizers can stave off bacterial sickness like strep-throat or salmonella poisoning but at the same time are wiping out good bacteria that help protect against future sicknesses.

It's not a bad idea to use hand sanitizer, they are beneficial, there are just better options that don't expose you to as many chemicals.

There are also other downsides to using hand sanitizer that have nothing to do with sicknesses. Such as dry skin, hand sanitizer poisoning (from overusing), among other things that you can find in this article here which also outlines the benefits of using hand sanitizer.

Many brands of hand sanitizer have also been found to contain cancer causing chemicals. Which just adds another reason to not use main stream hand sanitizers.

Thankfully, there's a better way. You can make your own hand sanitizer at home.

Homemade Hand Sanitizer!

You'll need:

  • 2 ounce glass bottle with spray cap

  • 3 pumps of Organic Aloe Vera Gel

  • 1/4 a cup of purified water

  • 20-30 drops of Five Thieves Organic Essential Oil

Add it all to the bottle and shake, and you have homemade hand sanitizer!

It's that easy. Five Thieves contains a blend of herbs (listed below with the amazing capabilities of these natural oils).

Clove - anti-microbial & anti-fungal

Lemon - anti-septic

Eucalyptus - anti-viral, anti-septic, anti-fungal, & anti-bacterial

Cinnamon - anti-septic

Rosemary - anti-bacterial

Which makes it effective against multiple viruses, such as:

  • Covid

  • Flu

  • Common Cold

  • Stomach Bugs

  • Etc.

Not to mention it covers the bacterial side of things and the fungal, septic, and microbial! How amazing is that? Add in the fact that the aloe helps to keep the skin from drying out and that fact that you don't have to worry about hand sanitizer poisoning due to too much alcohol on the skin and it's a win-win.

If you don't have time to make your own hand sanitizer we have a homemade natural hand sanitizer now available in the office. It's locally made by Kayti-Did Essentials and is only available in office. So, feel free to stop by during business hours to grab a bottle.
